THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

Before I touch my phone in the morning to turn on mediation, I show gratitude. The power of gratitude is an essential element of growth that elevates our moods, energizes us, and enhances our overall well-being. 

Emotions are fueled by thoughts, and when we associate these thoughts with gratitude, our thoughts become more positive and happier. 

I have always been aware of the idea of “gratitude,” but in these last few years have I really been able to self-reflect and open myself up to gratitude. As a Black woman growing up in a world where I often felt powerless, it was always difficult to appreciate what was around me. Sometimes it felt like no matter how hard I tried, I could not achieve success or personal fulfillment. These are thoughts that I had as early as four-years-old. 

Unfortunately, all of this negativity that I felt engrossed in, prevented me from seeing all of the abundances in my life until I became an adult. Even now, I show gratitude, but I know that there is still more appreciation to be had and more gratefulness to be implemented in my life and the way I treat myself and others. 

In today’s age, the idea of “manifestation” has become widely popular. The word is thrown around so often that sometimes it feels as if it has lost its true meaning. This is partly because people do lots of “manifesting” without “releasing,” but also do not show gratitude for what they already have before manifesting more.

These habits can simply turn into greed and overindulgence. I can tell you that there is nothing wrong with living your best life and indulging in all of life’s pleasures.

However, if you aren’t showing gratitude, it can create selfishness and greed. We don’t want that!

So how can we show the power of gratitude? Here are a few simple things you can start doing today to show gratitude.

  1. Start your morning and end your evening by saying “Thank you” to your higher power. Use these mornings to show gratitude for being able to wake up, and set intentions for how you want to make the best use of your day. At night, show gratitude for all the blessings you were blessed with throughout the day. 
  2. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Showing gratitude for ourselves and what we have accomplished can easily be neglected. Patting ourselves on the back and reminding ourselves of our own power and capabilities is imperative in enhancing our confidence and solar plexus’. 
  3. Tell your loved ones that you love them. Showing gratitude for those who have impacted us and brought joy into our lives is so important. We all want to be acknowledged, especially when we have used our energy to help, console and love others. So we must do onto others as we would want to be done onto ourselves. Showing gratitude is such a simple way to show love. Love and gratitude go hand and hand. 
  4. Repeat Gratitude Affirmations. Repeating affirmations like the one in our Gratitude Mediation (link), helps us show gratitude to the energetic forces of the universe. An example of a gratitude affirmation: 

“I realize that what is right about my life outnumbers what I perceive to be wrong about my life. I choose to focus on what makes me feel good. I am grateful.”
